Escrita por Cary 'Hippy' Gilbert, Kenny Gamble e Leon Huff, a música descreve um caso extraconjugal entre um homem e sua amante, a Sra. Jones.

O single se tornou o número um na Billboard Hot 100, ficando nessa posição por três semanas, em dezembro de 1972. Me and Mrs. Jones também conseguiu a mesma façanha na Billboard R&B Singles Chart, permanecendo na posição número um por quatro semanas. O lado B do compacto lançado no Brasil trazia uma versão dançante de Your Song, de Elton John e Bernie Taupin, outro grande sucesso.
