Gary Moore iniciou a trajetória profissional aos 16 anos de idade, tendo Eric Clapton, Peter Green e Jimi Hendrix como ídolos e participando das gravações de um álbum da banda de folk Dr. Strangely Stranger. Pouco depois, Moore estava no Thin Lizzy (banda irlandesa), onde conheceu seu fiel comparsa, Mr. Phil Lynott.

No Thin Lizzy, ele colaborou tocando em shows no inicio da banda e no álbum Black Rose (1979). Fez a sua carreira a solo e obteve muito sucesso na Europa e no Japão, com destaque em duas fases distintas: a mais pesada, de discos como "Corridors Of Power, Victims Of Future" e "Wild Frontier" na, década de 80, e a mais blueseira e comercialmente rentável, de álbuns como Still Got the Blues (1990).

Foi encontrado morto devido a uma parada cardíaca, num quarto de hotel, no dia 6 de Fevereiro de 2011, em Estepona, Espanha, onde se encontrava a passar férias.

Em 2013, Eric Clapton homenageou o amigo com a gravação de Still Got the Blues no álbum Old Sock, que tem a participação de Steve Winwood.
