Em 1972, o Steely Dan lança Can't Buy a Thrill, seu primeiro disco, e emplaca o hit Do it Again. Formada por Donald Fagen (piano, teclados e vocal), Walter Becker (baixo e guitarra), Denny Diaz (guitarra), Jim Hodder (bateria), David Palmer (vocais) e o lendário Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (guitarra e percussão), a banda gravou mais dois discos até 1974, quando vários integrantes saíram (Jeff Baxter, por exemplo, entrou de vez no Doobie Brothers, com quem já trabalhava, e David Palmer foi tocar com Carole King) e Fagen e Becker passaram a ser o centro do projeto. De 1975 a 1980, os dois priorizaram os trabalhos de estúdio, agregando uma linguagem jazzística ao rock. Considerada "a banda dos músicos", o Steely Dan sai de cena até 1994, quando grava o antológico Alive in America. Em 2000, após outra longa ausência, o álbum Two Against Nature é premiado com quatro Grammys.
