A WHITER SHADE OF PALE (1967) PROCOL HARUM

Canção de estreia da banda britânica Procol Harum, lançada em 12 de maio de 1967, alcançou a primeira colocação no UK Singles Chart em junho de 1967, e permaneceu por seis semanas. Sem muita promoção, atingiu a quinta posição nas paradas americanas.

Mais de 900 gravações por outros artistas são conhecidas. A música foi incluída em inúmeras compilações sobre os sucessos da década e ainda é usada em trilhas sonoras de muitos filmes, como The Big Chill, Purple Haze, Breaking the Waves, The Boat That Rocked e New York Stories (Martin Scorsese). Em uma cena antológica de The Commitments (Allan Parker, 1991), um padre corrige um dos personagens que está executando a música no órgão da igreja em relação à letra e diz que é uma das letras mais horríveis que ele já ouviu. Na verdade, há quem afirme que a canção é resultado de uma grande "viagem".

Os créditos de composição originais foram somente para Gary Brooker e Keith Reid. Em 30 de julho de 2009, Matthew Fisher ganhou direito aos créditos de coautoria da música em decisão unânime do Law Lords.
